IR Thermometer is best toy EVER

I bought my Infra-Red Laser Thermometer a couple of years back and it has been one of the best investments I have made. The ability to get instant feedback on the temperature of something has made a huge difference in proving what you say.

Last week, I was able to go up into someone's attic and rather than say, "wow, this is hot", I could point the thermometer at the plywood roofing and say, "This area of the roof is currently registering 168 degrees Fahrenheit."

This also gives you verifiable proof that you have successfully lowered the temperature of the attic. Let's face it, when an attic is 140 degrees, and you are able to lower it to 110 degrees, that's a really big difference, but not a difference that you can feel without measuring.

Unless you make your attic an enclosed and air conditioned space, you are really just trying to make sure that the attic stays at or below the ambient outside temperature. That's the best you can shoot for. Usually, an enclosed space that gets cooked is still going to be slightly above the outside temperature no matter what you do, since it not only shares the same air, but has heat being applied to it.

You may not be able to tell the difference innately (the guy I work with claims he can), but the Infra-Red Thermometer can. And it is something that you can immediately show the homeowner to reinforce and reward their decision.

I paid $65 for the IR Thermometer I bought and it was a 10:1 model (it will measure a 1 inch circle at 10 inches away).

I recently found a 12:1 IR Thermometer that was $24. it looks like a great deal and I have actually bought some flashlights from this site before.

2 weeks ago a friend needed to borrow my IR thermometer to see why his air conditioner in his house couldn't keep it cool. By checking the temperature of the copper line coming out of his unit outside we could see that the problem was with the outside unit and not with the inside unit (his compressor was going out).

I typically tell a homeowner to turn their AC off for 30 minutes and then I run around the house and check to see the different temperatures of the ceilings, walls, and windows. When the AC is on, they all show the same temp, but turn off the AC and the less insulated areas will heat up faster. Now I know where to stuff more insulation.

All this from a $24 tool. Heck of a deal there.
